Wednesday was the first day of DEMA.  I was apprehensive and prepared for the worst during the registration process.  But what a relief; maybe 2 minutes and I was registered and credentialed.  Maybe these folks are finally getting their act together.

Then I walked through the gateway onto the show floor and the first thing to hit you in the face was the PADI booth.  And the first station within the PADI booth was the BSA booth.  It was manned by Larry and Donna Cunningham who have been involved with Venturing since its infancy.  After visiting with the Cunninghams I made a preliminary round through the acres of DEMA exhibitors.  When lunch time arrived I relieved the Cunninghams and stood watch at the PADI BSA booth for an hour or so.  After that I went to some of the PADI mini seminars.

In the past, the Florida Sea Base has had a challenge satisfying the PADI paperwork requirements for the Scuba Liveaboard Adventure wherein the participants frequently receive multiple certifications.  We had to apply annually for a camp waiver that allowed us to use one set of paperwork for these multiple certifications.  The PADI Risk Management folks usually granted the waiver but seemed to do so reluctantly.  Now PADI has a new form 10038 (10038 ConEdAdmnDoc_v1_0909FF).  This form combines the three essential PADI documents (medical, liability waiver and Safe Diving Practices) and is valid for all certification levels after Open Water Diver up to (but not including) Divemaster and is good for one year.  So now we can use this form and not have to apply for an annual waiver.

On Thursday I walked the floor some more in the morning.  In the afternoon PADI had a training seminar on how the dive centers could work with the BSA and use the brand new Scuba Diving merit badge to increase their business.  The seminar was standing room only.
