In the past, the BSA minimum age for scuba diving was 14. Therefore scuba participants had to be 14 years of age before they could scuba dive at the Florida Sea Base or in a unit activity. However, High Adventure policy allowed persons to participate in other programs provided they were turning 14 on or before 01 September of the year they were going to participate.

The new BSA Scuba Policy allows persons of “Scouting age” (generally meaning as young as 10.5 years) to participate in scuba. However, the High Adventure age policy remains the same. Therefore, beginning 01 January 2010 persons can participate in FSB scuba programs if they will be 14 years old by 01 September 2010.

One Response to “Change in Age Policy for FSB Scuba Participants”

  1. Rob Kolb, Director of Program says:

Dear Sea Base Scuba Crew Leader

We are pleased to announce a change to our age policy for Sea Base Scuba participants. Beginning January 2010, the age requirement for Scuba participants will be the same as the rest of the Sea Base programs, 14 years old by September 1st of the year of the adventure.

The change is due to new Scouting guidelines for Scuba diving adopted by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America. Now all Sea Base High Adventure participants have just the one age requirement, which is also a National policy to which we must strictly adhere.

We hope this policy change allows more Scouts to participate in Scuba programs with their peers. All other BSA and Sea Base Scuba policies remain the same as found in the Participant’s Guide and on our website.

We look forward to seeing your crew at Sea Base in 2010.

    Sincerely,

    Rob Kolb
    Director of Program
